TMUA preparation · Cambridge PhD
Dr Nicky Grant offers targeted TMUA preparation for economics and maths applicants to Cambridge, Warwick, Durham and other universities. A Cambridge PhD with deep expertise in mathematical reasoning, he focuses especially on Paper 2, where most candidates have the most to gain.
The TMUA is a genuine obstacle for many strong applicants. Paper 2 in particular tests mathematical reasoning skills that are not developed in standard A Level teaching. The right preparation directly addresses this gap.
What the TMUA tests
Paper 1 · 75 minutes
Algebra, calculus, trigonometry, sequences, geometry and statistics. The content is at A Level standard but applied at speed with less scaffolding. Most students with strong A Level grades can improve their Paper 1 score significantly with targeted timed practice.

Paper 2 · 75 minutes · most impact here
Evaluating mathematical arguments, identifying flaws in proofs, constructing and assessing logical reasoning. This is the paper most students struggle with because A Level teaching does not develop these skills. Sessions on Paper 2 focus on learning to read and evaluate mathematical argument, a skill that also directly helps in Oxbridge interviews.

FAQs
The TMUA is required or recommended for economics and related courses at Cambridge, Warwick, Durham, Lancaster, and several other UK universities. Requirements change, always check the admissions pages for the specific universities and courses you are applying to.
The test is typically sat in October. Most students benefit from starting preparation in September, with four to eight focused sessions. Starting earlier in Year 13 is also fine and reduces the pressure near the test date.
Typically four to six sessions: two on Paper 1 (speed and accuracy), and two to four on Paper 2 (reasoning skills). The exact number depends on starting level and available time before the test date.
